Tent Revival

At first I got excited because I thought there was a circus in town when I saw them erecting this huge tent.  It turns out to be a Tent Revival, which is a big baptist tradition here in the Mountains.  I asked my wife who grew up Southern Baptist what was the deal with this tradition.  She said it was church in a tent.

  1. Darn, I was hoping you'd visit and give us a report! :-)

There don't seem to be as many tent revivals in our area as there used to be. I've never been to one, but it seems like it would be interesting.

  2. They still happen in other parts o' the country, too! We used to live in a predominantly AFrican-American neighborhood in sw lower Michigan. The Rock of Revelation Church had tent revivals EVERY SUMMER. Loud! Yes, very loud. But the music was AWESOME as it came wafting up the hill to our sinful home...

    1. Very interesting, I thought this was a Southern Phenomenon.....but Michigan does have a deep connection to the South, as large amounts of Southerners migrated there to work in the auto plants

  3. Very true--Ypsilanti is alternately known as Ypsitucky! Lots of southern migration both black and white, like Chicago. It's definitely not as widespread up there. My great grampa actually used to run evangelist tent shows around lower Michigan in the 30's and 40's. Yikes.
