Abandoned House in a Cotton Field

The farming of cotton has long been associated with the South.  While often associated with a troubling past, cotton can still be found growing across the Southern United States.  To me, there is something deeply striking about a field full of cotton.

Up close cotton in fascinating.  While the white fluffy part is as fluffy as you'd think, the husk is shockingly hard, shard and will slice your hand open.

While driving with my buddy on the way to see the World's Oldest Ham, we stumbled across and amazing farm house in the middle of a field of cotton.

The brittle old house was covered with cotton on all sides.

I couldn't help but take a peek inside to find a strikingly yellow room.

A trip upstairs allowed some breathtaking views of the surrounding cotton.

I love that beautiful barn.

Here's a peek through the front window.

Blarney Stone of Texas

Some would think you have to travel all the way to Ireland to kiss the Blarney Stone.  They are dead wrong!  There is never any reason to leave America!

Shamrock, TX wasn't necessarily named after Ireland.  It was simply given the name "Shamrock" with the hope that its residents would have good luck.

However, in 1959 Shamrock's name would help it to secure an actual piece of Ireland's famous Blarney Stone.   The piece was transported into town under the armed protection of the Texas National Guard and entombed in a pillar in a small park, where it quietly sits to this day.

The town must have thought the concrete block in the park wasn't showy enough because they created another more stylized Blarney stone for tourists to kiss.  The thing was, this new Blarney stone did not contain any parts of the original Blarney stone.

While traveling through Texas I had the honor of kissing both stones.  Check it out below.

The Peabody Ducks: World's Snootiest Water Fowl

In Memphis, TN sits one of the South's most legendary Hotels: The Peabody.

The Peabody is not only famous for being a super duper swanky, its actually more famous for their ducks.  For some reason there is a flock of ducks that live in a penthouse suite.  Every morning the Ducks take the elevator down to the Fountain where they spend the day swimming in the lobby.  The ducks are treated like royalty and escorted to and from the fountain on a red carpet with much pomp and circumstances.  The lobby gets crowded whenever the ducks are coming and going.  Security is very tight and I got yelled at both for standing to close to the ducks and taking this picture.....

I snuck past the robe into the lounge, but ended up getting yelled for standing up trying to see the ducks instead of sitting in a chair.  They are serious about these ducks man.  Check it out.

The Legend of Buford Pusser

To me one of the most iconic Folk Heroes in all the South is Buford Pusser.  He embodies the American spirit of rugged individualism to an extreme.  A man that never backed down against insurmountable odds.  A man that saw that world as black/white, good/evil, right/wrong.  A man of unshakeable principles.  To some he is a true great American hero, an embodiment of law in order at all costs.   To others he was seen as a brutal man.  A man unwilling to see any shades of grey.  A man whose dedication to lofty principles could be fanatical and frightening.  A complex case, but a true legend in every since of the word.

On my roadtrip back in November I had a chance to visit Buford's home town of Adamsville, TN.  His home has been turned into a museum, sadly, I was unable to manage to be there while they were open.  It did not however, stop me from reflecting on the man this town holds so dear.  Check out the video below to see my trip to Adamsville.
